Thai police clearance certificate: purpose, difference to the German Fuehrungszeugnis
ใบรับรองความประพฤติ (Bai Rap Rong Khwam Praphrut)
A Thai police clearance certificate states whether a person has a criminal record in Thailand. It is not the German Fuehrungszeugnis, which is a separate document issued in Germany. Offices in Germany may ask for the Thai certificate for residence, work or naturalisation.
What the certificate is
The Thai police clearance certificate is issued by the Royal Thai Police on the basis of a check of the criminal records for the applicant. It typically shows the name, date of birth, ID or passport number, the result of the check, a date and an official stamp or signature. The exact layout, and how and where you can apply, depend on the current rules of the Thai police, so check their website or ask an embassy or consulate.
Not the same as a Fuehrungszeugnis
The German Fuehrungszeugnis is issued by the Federal Office of Justice in Germany and shows entries in the German Federal Central Criminal Register. It says nothing about a record in Thailand. Likewise the Thai certificate says nothing about Germany. Some German procedures, for example a residence or naturalisation procedure, may ask for evidence from other countries where a person lived, and which evidence they accept is for the office to decide.
- Thai certificate: Thai record, issued in Thailand.
- Fuehrungszeugnis: German record, requested through the local registration office.
- Some employers and authorities ask for the German one only.
Who asks for it, and how fresh must it be
You may be asked by the Auslaenderbehoerde, a naturalisation office, an employer or a licensing body. There is no single maximum age that we can state for all German offices. Some want a certificate issued within a few months, others set a different period. Ask which age is accepted before you order, because ordering too early can force you to repeat the whole chain.
Legalisation and translation
Thai public documents used in Germany have so far needed legalisation by the German Embassy in Bangkok. Thailand joins the Apostille Convention on 28 February 2027. Ask the embassy and the requesting office which procedure applies. German authorities generally require a complete German translation by a sworn translator.
How we help, and when you need a sworn translator
DocDee reads the Thai certificate, gives you a summary in your language and lists the fields found: name, ID number, date of issue (converted from the Buddhist Era) and the result. The date of issue matters because freshness is often the first thing an office checks.
The summary does not replace an official translation. For the office you need a sworn translation, which we offer as an optional paid step. The office decides whether it accepts the document.
Checklist
- Ask the German office whether it needs the Thai certificate at all.
- Ask how recent the certificate must be at the time of submission.
- Check the name and the passport number against your passport.
- Note the date of issue in B.E. and CE.
- Plan the time for legalisation and sworn translation before ordering.
- Keep the original unlaminated.

Can a Thai police clearance replace the German Fuehrungszeugnis?
- No. They cover different countries and are issued by different authorities. If a German office asks for a Fuehrungszeugnis, apply for it in Germany. If it asks for a Thai certificate, request that one.
How long is a Thai police clearance valid?
- The certificate may not print a validity date. German offices apply their own limits on how old it may be. Ask the office that requested it.
Do I need legalisation?
- So far, Thai public documents used in Germany have needed legalisation by the German Embassy in Bangkok. Since Thailand joins the Apostille Convention on 28 February 2027, confirm the current procedure with the embassy and the office.
Does DocDee check whether the certificate is genuine?
- No. We read the content and flag unreadable parts. Verification of authenticity is a matter for the issuing authority and the embassy.
